Dutchman Tony Overwater (Rotterdam 24th of March 1965) is an extraordinary gifted bassist, who has played with many great jazz artists. With his Tony Overwater Trio he creates an international stir in 2000 with the Edison awarded debut album OP. Overwater is also a member of the renowned Yuri Honing Trio and the brand new electric jazz quartet Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, where he plays the bass guitar. Besides that, Overwater is a highly acclaimed composer, writing music for his own group, documentaries and modern, varying from jazz to improvised, from Arab to classical. Lastly, he works on music education with projects like Kikker Swingt and Stadsnootjes (City Notes). In 2003 Overwater received the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize, thé Dutch jazz award. Present projects:

Co-operation between classical and jazz
Last year Tony Overwater Trio and Calefax Reed Quintet joined forces to record two Ellington suites: the famous Far East Suite and the lesser known The River. Immediately the project was booked at the North Sea Jazz Festival and it received massive media coverage. “I can full-heartedly recommend this CD for your collection of Ellingtonia” (excerpt from the review in The International Duke Ellington Music Society Bulletin, August 2005), is one of many positive reactions that this project has received. More concerts for 2006 - 2007 will be booked. |
Tony Overwater Kwintet The follow-up of the successful album Kikker swingt (Frog swings)is out now! Kikker heeft de blues (Frog’s got the blues) features six new adventures of Kikker put to music by the Tony Overwater Quintet. This time the stories are read out by actor Nico de Vries. The album is dedicated to Max Velthuijs, the creator of Kikker, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 82.
