Winterreise Festival on Youtube On the 29th of December the first edition of the entire new and very successful festival Winterreise took place in Paradiso, Amsterdam.Initiator Yuri Honing filled the evening with a wide range of music, from Wired Paradise, his own electric group, to Rima Khcheich, one of Lebanon’s leading vocalists. Not only has Yuri Honing just released his version of Schubert’s Winterreise, he is the initiator and curator of a brand new yearly music festival, also entitled Winterreise. At the end of 2007, during those inspiring days just before closing yet another year, Yuri Honing invites you to come to Holland’s most popular pop venue, Paradiso, in Amsterdam and enjoy his choice of music representing ‘the world coming at you’! Besides heavy rock guitars and jazz by Honing’s own electric group Wired Paradise, one of the leading vocalists of the Middle East will perform: Rima Khcheich. And naturally the program wouldn’t be complete without Honing’s own interpretation of Schubert’s opus magnum. Read more about the program.

Yuri Honing has joined forces with Dutch pianist Nora Mulder to record the first-ever instrumental version of Schubert’s Winterreise! Both the classical music critics as well as the jazz police are waiting patiently to give their judgement! But even more important, we invite jazz- and classical music fans to come and listen to this unique project: the CD will be released in November 2007 and currently a concert tour is being organised. In October 2006 the new CD of drummer Joost Lijbaart and pianist Wolfert Brederode, entitled One, has been released. The album, as well as the presentation concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam in November, received many great reviews. See the concert schedulefor more concerts in 2007, both in Germany as well as in The Netherlands. New release in 2007 The renowned Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich starts a new crossover project with Jazz in Motion. In 2002-2003 Rima was also part of the successful Arab/Dutch formation Orient Express that featured a/o the members of the Yuri Honing Trio. A warm friendship between the musicians developed and they stayed in touch with each other. Early 2006 Rima invited bassist Tony Overwater for a special solo project in Beirut. After the war in Lebanon, Rima visited Holland to give an exclusive concert at the international War & Peace Conference in Amsterdam. She was accompanied by Tony Overwater, saxophonist Yuri Honing, guitarist Maarten van der Grinten and drummer Joost Lijbaart. The result of this performance was so extraordinary, the musicians immediately decided to make plans for the near future. In 2007 a new CD will be released and an international presentation tour will follow. The repertoire of the new album consists of traditional and modern Arab songs in western contemporary arrangements: music that bridges the gap between two musical cultures.
Yuri Honing Wired Paradise After welcoming Dutch rock guitarist Paul Jan Bakker to the group in summer 2006, Yuri Honing Wired Paradise - the quintet - went on tour in The Netherlands and in Germany. After many successful concerts a/o in the prestigious German Jazzclub Unterfahrt in München and in the up and coming Dutch Rotterdam jazz venue Lantaren/Venster, the group has decided to go into the studio again next year in this new line up and record the successor of the Edison nominated Temptation. The renowned Libanese singer Rima Khcheich will be in The Netherlands for a special concert at the Conference Oorlog en Vrede (War and Peace) on Sunday October 29. Rima will perform with saxophonist Yuri Honing, guitarist Maarten van der Grinten, bassist Tony Overwater and drummer Joost Lijbaart. CD presentation: November 10, 2006 at the Bimhuis Amsterdam An update on the Yuri Honing Trio In October 2006, after the trio will have returned from their China tour, it’s time to go into the studio again. It has been almost two years since their acclaimed live-CD Alive was released. This time the trio will record an album with the famous Moroccan ud-player Said Chraibi. Their new CD won’t be released until next year, but for those who are curious please come to the concert Jazz Meets World on October 5 in Rotterdam, at Theater de Evenaar, where Saïd and the trio will perform in connection with the exhibition Focus Marokko. Yuri Honing Wired Paradise have been invited to perform at North Sea Jazz on the opening night, Friday 14th. After having been organized in the Congresgebouw in The Hague for 30 years, the prestigious jazz festival has moved to another venue. This year North Sea Jazz will have its first edition in the city of Rotterdam, where the venue of Ahoy’ welcomes you to the world biggest jazz event. Yuri Honing Wired Paradise will perform in the Missouri Tent.

New CD release and concerts coming up
Joost Lijbaart & Wolfert Brederode
Joost Lijbaart and pianist Wolfert Brederode, well known for his close collaboration with ECM recording Swiss vocalist Susanne Abbuehl and his own upcoming debut on ECM, recently started working together with the famous Dutch writer Frans Thomése. Thomése is the author of the acclaimed book Shadow Child, in which he describes the death of his child. The book has been a huge success in The Netherlands. It has been translated into other languages and published in various European countries. Thomése also ‘recorded’ the book for blind people and he invited Lijbaart and Brederode to add music to the text, read by Thomése himself.
The collaboration between Lijbaart en Brederode turned out so well, they have decided to record a duo album. The CD release is to be expected in September or October 2006 and already some concert dates have been booked. More info will follow shortly.Friday April 7 Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ

On Friday April 7, Yuri Honing and the acclaimed jazz vocalist Fay Claassen will perform with the Metropole Orchestra led by Vince Mendoza in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam. Both artists will alternately perform with the orchestra and they will also present some pieces together. For Yuri, Vince and the orchestra, this is a great opportunity to present their new CD Symphonic, which has just been released.

In April 2006 the Tony Overwater Trio and Calefax Reed Quintet play their highly acclaimed Ellington Suites. Last year the two groups arranged the famous Far East Suite and the lesser known The River for this particular line up (without piano) and went into the studio. The project turned out to be very successful and it received massive media coverage, followed by great performances at a/o the Bimhuis, the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Uitmarkt. For those who have missed these concerts, check out the new concert dates in April.

Kikker Swingt

In 2003 Tony Overwater and his group went into the studio with the famous Dutch author of childern’s books, Max Velthuijs, to record Kikker Swingt (Frog ‘Grooves’).
With regard to this project for children Max Velthuijs read some of his most popular stories about Frog, accompanied by the music of the Tony Overwater Group.
On Sunday April 23, 2006 there will be a performance of Kikker Swingt in Utrecht. Actor Nico de Vries will now read the stories since Max Velthuijs sadly passed away last year. Tony’s group consists of Angelo Verploegen (t), Maarten Ornstein (cl, ts), Marc van Roon (p) and Joshua Samson (perc).

On March 8 the TV recording of Yuri Honing Wired Paradise at Vrije Geluiden took place. The band played two pieces of their debut album Temptation and host Hans Flupsen extensively interviewed Yuri.

New concert dates Yuri Honing Wired Paradise
Rewired
In February several Dutch presentation concerts of Yuri Honing Wired Paradise unfortunately had to be postponed due to a shoulder injury of Yuri. In the meantime new dates have been booked and Yuri’s shoulder is getting better everyday. He is expected to play again in March.

Another new release of Yuri Honing is coming up
Yuri Honing & Vince Mendoza / Metropole Orchestra
In spring 2006 Yuri will release yet another album under his name. Last year he was asked by the NPS (Dutch national radio) for a special radio broadcast with the Metropole Orchestra led by Vince Mendoza. The radio recording, consisting of compositions by Honing and Mendoza, was so beautiful, all parties unanimously decided it should be released it on CD. In March Symphonic (JIM75227) will be released in the Benelux by Challenge Records International. The European release will follow soon.
